The Russell® Chest Seal (SKU: PDF-0680) by Safeguard Medical is a low-profile vented chest seal with a 4-aperture peripheral valve and patented hydrogel matrix mounted on non-woven fabric. Validated as 100% effective in active-bleeding open chest wound models, it packages at 14 × 2.7 cm and deploys to 20.3 × 15.2 cm — weighing just 0.7 oz. Proven performance in temperatures from -19.5°C to 71.5°C in the presence of hair, blood, and sand.

Product Overview
The Russell® Chest Seal (PDF-0680) by Safeguard Medical combines three engineering decisions that distinguish it from most other chest seals on the market. First, the 4-aperture peripheral valve — four large openings distributed around the seal's perimeter — allows air and blood drainage while maintaining occlusion at the wound center. The peripheral placement of the apertures reduces the risk of soft tissue or blood from the wound itself directly occluding the venting path. Second, the hydrogel matrix is mounted on a non-woven fabric base, which creates a flexible and conformable adhesive surface that drapes over bony prominences and the curved anatomy of the chest wall without losing contact.
Third, the silicone-coated release liner prevents the dressing from stretching or distorting during removal of the backing — a critical detail in stress application where a responder may pull the liner at an angle rather than perfectly parallel to the seal surface. Distorted seals have wrinkled adhesive edges that allow air tracking. Research by Kheirabadi et al. validated the Russell Chest Seal as one of only two seals proven 100% effective in an open chest wound model with active bleeding. Adhesion was demonstrated at -19.5°C (-3.1°F) and 71.5°C (160.7°F) in the presence of hair, blood, and sand — an extreme temperature range that exceeds most operational scenarios.
The extremely compact packaged format — just 14 × 2.7 cm (approximately 5.5" × 1") — is one of the smallest footprints for a full-coverage chest seal, making it an excellent choice for plate carrier pouches, ankle kits, and ultra-slim IFAK configurations. Despite the minimal packaging volume, the deployed seal expands to 20.3 × 15.2 cm, providing coverage comparable to the full-size HyFin. The large central hole in the base material facilitates accurate wound-centered placement and allows visual monitoring of the wound after application. Application Instructions
- Expose and clear wound: Remove clothing; clear excess blood and moisture. The non-woven fabric backing will conform to irregular surfaces.
- Remove silicone liner: Peel the silicone-coated release liner carefully and evenly — the liner's silicone coating prevents seal distortion during this step.
- Center over wound: Use the large central hole in the base to accurately center the seal over the wound opening. Press firmly from center outward.
- Treat exit wound: Apply a second seal if an exit wound is present.
- Monitor: Watch for tension pneumothorax. If tension develops, burp the seal by lifting an edge, then re-apply.
