Product Overview

Safeguard Medical's Sentinel™ Chest Seal addresses two failure modes that occur in vented chest seals: vent occlusion from blood or soft tissue, and adhesion loss in contaminated environments. The dual-vent technology provides simultaneous release pathways for both air and blood — critically, air and blood are channeled separately, reducing the likelihood that blood pooling will occlude the air venting pathway. Published research (Kotora Jr. et al.) confirmed that vented chest seals prevent tension pneumothorax in communicating pneumothorax models, and the Sentinel's design was specifically engineered to minimize the vent occlusion risk identified in that research.

The Sentinel's 360° Sentinel 10x™ adhesive base uses an acrylate formulation that encircles the wound in a complete ring, maintaining static placement across a wide range of environments. Unlike some hydrogel-only designs, the acrylate base is not water-based, giving it a different failure mode profile — it does not soften or swell in the presence of water or blood, maintaining a consistent adhesive surface over long evacuation periods. The transparent layered construction of the seal allows wound monitoring after application without removing the device.

The Sentinel is the standalone chest seal component of Safeguard Medical's comprehensive SENTINEL Chest Trauma Kit, which also includes the Dart® needle decompression device and Dart® Target placement guide. Purchasing the individual Sentinel seal allows integration into existing IFAKs or trauma kits. Application Instructions

  1. Expose the wound: Remove clothing from the chest; clear excess blood and moisture from the wound site.
  2. Open packaging: Tear the package; the Sentinel is presented with the adhesive side down.
  3. Align and apply: Center the dressing over the wound; press the 360° adhesive ring firmly to the chest wall, working from center outward. The transparent backing confirms accurate placement over the wound.
  4. Treat exit wound: Apply a second chest seal to the exit wound if present.
  5. Monitor: Watch for tension pneumothorax signs. If tension develops, burp the seal or proceed to needle decompression per TCCC protocol using a 14-gauge 3.25" catheter at the 2nd intercostal space, midclavicular line.
