Product Overview

The SnakeStaff ETQ™ Gen 2 (Everyday Carry Tourniquet, second generation) represents a purpose-built solution for the gap between full-size tactical tourniquets and no tourniquet at all. The original Gen 1 was the smallest windlass tourniquet on the market — a proven product that has saved documented lives — but SnakeStaff Systems' development team, drawing on feedback from U.S. Military and Special Forces operators, civilian EMS professionals, and law enforcement officers, identified three specific mechanical improvements that could substantially improve one-handed reliability. These became the three patent-pending features defining Gen 2: the Power Curve™, the Tri-Grip Windlass™, and the Power Ring™.

The Power Curve™ addresses a design limitation common to all straight-slot tourniquet bodies: when a band is tightened through a straight slot, the edges of the slot concentrate stress, creating uneven pressure distribution across the band width. Over time or at high tension, this can cause uneven tissue compression and increases band wear. The Power Curve's curved geometry centers the load and redistributes tension evenly across the band's width, reducing both tissue injury risk and mechanical wear. The Tri-Grip Windlass™ replaces the traditional cylindrical rod with a three-sided (triangular cross-section) windlass body that provides three flat grip surfaces per side — dramatically increasing effective gripping area for gloved hands or blood-slick conditions where a round rod becomes dangerously slippery. The Power Ring™ — a steel ring beneath the windlass — creates vertical space to clear the carabiner lock and provides mechanical leverage for the critical first two turns, which are always the hardest rotations in windlass application.

The ETQ Gen 2 Standard (1" band) is the most compact version, optimized for pocket carry, wallet inserts, or flat packing in any kit where space is at a premium. It is complemented by the ETQ Gen 2 Wide (1.5" band) for applications requiring greater pressure distribution. Both are part of MED-TAC's tourniquets & pouches collection. For CoTCCC-recommended primary tourniquets, the C-A-T® Gen 7 and SOF-T® remain the primary duty options.

How to Apply

  1. Lasso or thread the ETQ around the limb 2–3 inches above the wound. The reinforced band backing prevents folding during routing.
  2. Pull the free end of the band firmly through the body slot — the Power Curve™ distributes tension across the full band width.
  3. Grip the Tri-Grip Windlass™ with two or three fingers; begin rotating. The Power Ring™ reduces initial turn resistance.
  4. Continue twisting until bleeding stops and distal pulse is absent; secure the windlass into the enlarged carabiner lock.
  5. Record application time and communicate to all subsequent caregivers.

Comparison Context

The ETQ Gen 2 Standard competes primarily with other EDC-format tourniquets as a pocket/backup device. It is not positioned to replace primary duty tourniquets on CoTCCC-recommended lists but instead fills the role of the tourniquet you always have with you — in a pocket, a vehicle console, a desk drawer, or a range bag — when a full-size IFAK is not immediately accessible. Its three patent-pending features represent genuine engineering improvements over comparable EDC competitors. For wider band coverage, the ETQ Gen 2 Wide (1.5") uses the same body with increased band coverage.
