Product Overview

Post-traumatic hemorrhage remains the leading cause of potentially preventable battlefield and trauma death — and the evidence is unambiguous that tourniquet application is the single most effective intervention in the first minutes following an extremity injury. The problem is that correct tourniquet application — high and tight, windlass tight enough to stop blood flow, secured without slippage — is a perishable psychomotor skill that degrades without practice. A blue trainer tourniquet on a tabletop gives students the mechanism, but not the feedback. The HM Tourniquet Arm Trainer provides both.

The trainer is a full-size adult male arm (modeled on a 6'2" adult) built from human-tissue-analog material — soft, yielding, anatomically representative tissue with realistic bone structure beneath. The simulated gunshot entry wound activates an artificial bleeding vessel when the IV bag is filled and pressurized. Students can see bleeding actively occur, practice applying a tourniquet to the correct location on a limb that behaves like a real limb, and immediately receive visual confirmation when the tourniquet application is effective — the bleeding stops. This feedback loop is the critical element that distinguishes meaningful task trainer practice from dry-run repetitions.

Self-healing material construction allows the wound site to be used repeatedly without requiring replacement. The gravity-fed bleeding system requires no batteries, pumps, or power connections — setup consists of hanging the IV bag and attaching the tubing, making the trainer appropriate for classroom training rooms, outdoor lanes, and vehicle-based tactical training environments. Three skin tone options (Caucasian, Hispanic, African American) support diverse patient presentation training, reinforcing the cognitive recognition skills that apply across the range of casualties responders encounter.

Training Setup

  1. Fill the 1,000 ml IV bag with water or training fluid (artificial blood provided)
  2. Connect the bag via the included tubing and clamp to the arm trainer's bleeding vessel
  3. Hang the IV bag above the arm to establish gravity-fed flow — open the clamp to begin simulated bleeding
  4. Student identifies bleeding site and applies tourniquet high and tight (or 2-3 inches above wound)
  5. Student windlasses and secures tourniquet until bleeding stops — visible endpoint confirmation
  6. Instructor assesses application: position, tightness, time-to-stop, windlass security
  7. Reset by closing clamp, re-orienting arm, and refreshing fluid for next student
