The IFAK Kit Builder — Wraps collection contains pressure dressings, elastic bandages, and multi-function wraps for custom Individual First Aid Kit builds. Sourced from original manufacturers, this selection covers the wrap/dressing component of TCCC-compliant IFAKs — Israeli Bandages, OLAES Modular Bandages, SWAT-T tourniquets/wraps, elastic cohesive bandages, and conforming gauze. Select individual components to complete or upgrade your IFAK.

What Is the Role of a Wrap or Pressure Dressing in an IFAK?

After wound packing with hemostatic gauze, a pressure dressing or wrap serves three critical functions: (1) maintaining direct pressure over the packed wound cavity to sustain hemostatic clot formation, (2) securing hemostatic gauze in place to prevent dislodgement during patient movement or transport, and (3) providing circumferential compression that reinforces wound closure. The Joint Trauma System Clinical Practice Guidelines on hemorrhage control specify that hemostatic gauze must be secured with a pressure dressing following wound packing. Without proper wrap application, even correctly packed wounds can re-bleed during extraction and transport.

Which Wrap or Pressure Dressing Should I Choose for My IFAK?

Product Primary Function Best For Notes
Israeli Bandage (Emergency Bandage) Pressure dressing with built-in bar General wound closure, post-packing 4" and 6" versions; simple one-handed application
OLAES Modular Bandage Multi-function: pressure, eye, chest seal Versatile IFAK component Contains gauze reservoir, eye cup component
SWAT-T Tourniquet/Wrap Dual-use: tourniquet + pressure wrap Pediatric, small limbs, junctional pressure Color-change tension indicator; not primary TQ
ACE / Elastic Bandage General compression and immobilization Splinting support, secondary wrapping Non-hemostatic; pairs with gauze or dressings
Conforming Gauze Roll Wound packing follow-on layer Soft-tissue wounds, padding under wrap Non-hemostatic; use over hemostatic gauze

How Do I Build a TCCC-Compliant IFAK?

A complete TCCC-compliant IFAK addresses each phase of the MARCH algorithm with individual components. The wrap/dressing component (this collection) is the fourth step after tourniquet, hemostatic agent, and chest seal selection. Use the IFAK Kit Builder series to source each category individually: Tourniquets, Hemostatic Agents, Chest Seals & Decompression Needles, Wraps (this collection), Bandages, and Treatment Accessories. Pre-built IFAK options are available in the IFAK Kits collection if you prefer a complete kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Israeli Bandage and why is it widely used?+
The Israeli Bandage (formally the Emergency Bandage, developed by IDF medic Bernard Bar-Natan) integrates an absorbent pad, elastic wrap, and a pressure bar into a single sterile unit. The pressure bar hooks into the wrap to create controlled pressure over a wound without requiring a second operator. It is designed for one-handed self-application, making it standard in military IFAKs worldwide. The 4-inch version is used for extremity and head wounds; the 6-inch for torso and larger surface wounds. It is not a primary tourniquet — it is a post-packing pressure dressing.
Can the SWAT-T be used as a primary tourniquet?+
The SWAT-T (Stretch, Wrap, and Tuck) can be applied as a tourniquet using its color-change tension indicator, but it is not a CoTCCC-recommended primary tourniquet for adults. It is most commonly used as a secondary tourniquet, a pressure bandage, a wound dressing, or as the primary tourniquet for pediatric patients and small limbs where CAT/SAM XT sizing is not appropriate. For adult extremity hemorrhage, a CAT Gen 7 or SAM XT should be the primary tourniquet. SWAT-T is a valuable multi-purpose wrap that adds capability without adding significant weight or bulk.
What does the OLAES Modular Bandage include?+
The OLAES (One-handed Low-profile All-extremity System) Modular Bandage by Tactical Medical Solutions includes an elastic compression wrap, a clear occlusive film that can be used as a chest seal (improvised), a rigid eye cup for eye injuries, and a gauze reservoir containing a rolled gauze pad. The modular design allows individual components to be removed and used independently. It is one of the most space-efficient multi-function dressings available for IFAK builds, addressing wound pressure, chest injury, and eye injury with a single item.
How do I apply a pressure dressing correctly after wound packing?+
After packing the wound firmly with hemostatic gauze and applying 3–5 minutes of direct manual pressure, place the absorbent pad of the pressure dressing directly over the packed wound. Wrap the elastic bandage circumferentially around the limb or body part, maintaining consistent tension — firm but not cutting off distal circulation. Use the pressure bar (Israeli Bandage) or clip closure to lock the wrap in place. Check for distal pulse (radial for arm, dorsalis pedis for leg) to confirm the wrap has not been applied too tightly. Mark the time of application on the patient's forehead or the dressing itself with a permanent marker.
How do wraps in an IFAK differ from standard ACE bandages?+
Tactical wraps designed for IFAK use — like the Israeli Bandage and OLAES — are sterile, single-use devices packaged for rapid deployment in contaminated environments. Standard ACE bandages are non-sterile, reusable, and lack the integrated pressure mechanisms of tactical dressings. For IFAK applications, sterility matters: open wounds in field conditions carry significant infection risk. Tactical dressings also include integrated absorption pads, pressure bars, or specialized attachment systems not found in standard elastic bandages. Use standard elastic bandages for splinting support and secondary wrapping over primary tactical dressings.
