What is the Celox-A applicator used for?
The Celox-A is designed specifically for narrow-entry penetrating wounds — gunshot wounds, stab injuries, and blast fragment injuries — where traditional hemostatic gauze packing is difficult or impossible due to the small wound diameter. The pre-filled syringe-style applicator delivers 6 grams of Celox chitosan granules through a narrow tube directly to the bleeding source, without requiring wound enlargement or digital exploration. It is a complementary tool alongside hemostatic gauze, not a standalone replacement.
How does Celox-A work differently from QuikClot Combat Gauze?
Celox-A uses chitosan, which works independently of the body's coagulation cascade through electrostatic muco-adhesion — chitosan binds directly to red blood cell membranes, causing them to aggregate into a gel-plug at the bleeding site. QuikClot Combat Gauze uses kaolin, which activates Factor XII to accelerate the intrinsic clotting cascade. The chitosan mechanism in Celox-A continues to work even in patients on anticoagulants (heparin, warfarin, DOACs) and in hypothermic conditions where enzyme-dependent clotting slows, making it advantageous for these patient populations.
Is the Celox-A safe for patients with shellfish allergies?
Clinical and allergy studies show no adverse reactions to Celox chitosan products in patients with shellfish allergies. The shellfish-derived chitosan is extensively purified during manufacturing to remove the allergenic proteins responsible for shellfish reactions — the allergy response to shellfish is triggered by proteins, not the chitosan polymer itself. Data supporting this is on file at Medtrade Products Ltd. (Celox Medical). However, as with any medical intervention, responders should be aware of the patient's allergy history and use clinical judgment.
What is the shelf life of the Celox-A applicator?
The Celox-A has a 4-year shelf life from the date of manufacture — shorter than the 5-year shelf life of Celox gauze products (Celox Rapid, Celox Z-Fold). The expiration date is marked on each individual package. Store at ambient temperature in dry conditions; no refrigeration is required. Do not use past the expiration date, as efficacy cannot be guaranteed. Rotate stock using first-in, first-out inventory management.
Can Celox-A be used in abdominal or chest wounds?
No. Celox-A is contraindicated for abdominal wounds and wounds unamenable to pressure. It should not be packed into body cavities. It is intended exclusively for external use on penetrating extremity and surface wounds. For junctional hemorrhage, deep cavitary wounds, or wounds where the bleeding source cannot be reached with the applicator and maintained under pressure, hemostatic gauze packing and tourniquet application per CoTCCC guidelines remain the standard of care.
