What is included in the HyFin USMC Chest Seal Combo Pack?
The USMC HyFin Chest Seal Combo Pack contains three items: one HyFin® Occlusive (non-vented) Chest Seal, one HyFin® Vent Chest Seal with 3-channel pressure-relief vents, and one clear resealable storage pouch. Both seals deploy to 6" × 6" and weigh a combined 2.9 oz. The combo addresses the standard of care for penetrating chest trauma — treating both entry and exit wounds simultaneously — while providing the option of deploying different seal types based on wound location.
Why does the USMC Combo include one vented and one non-vented seal?
Penetrating thoracic trauma often creates both an entry and an exit wound. CoTCCC guidelines recommend vented seals as the first-line option, but non-vented (occlusive) seals have clinical utility in specific scenarios — posterior wounds where the vent may face obstruction, multiple anterior wounds, or environments with heavy debris contamination. By packaging one of each type together, the USMC Combo gives responders maximum flexibility without requiring them to carry two separate packages. The vented seal is typically applied to the anterior (entry) wound; the occlusive seal addresses the posterior exit wound.
Is the HyFin USMC Combo Pack aligned with CoTCCC guidelines?
Yes. The 2024 TCCC Guidelines specify that all open and sucking chest wounds should be treated by immediately applying a vented chest seal. If a vented seal is unavailable, a non-vented seal may be used. The USMC Combo Pack provides both types, ensuring CoTCCC-aligned treatment of both entry and exit wounds. The vented HyFin® seal in this combo uses the patented 3-channel pressure-relief system consistent with the vented chest seal standard referenced in TCCC guidelines.
What makes the HyFin adhesive effective in combat or trauma conditions?
Both seals use North American Rescue's enhanced hydrogel adhesive technology, which maintains bond integrity in the presence of blood, perspiration, body hair, sand, and environmental contaminants — conditions that defeat standard acrylic medical adhesives. The transparent backing allows accurate wound-centered placement, and the large red elliptical pull tabs support single-step, gloved-hand application even under extreme physical and psychological stress. The seal conforms to the natural curvature of the chest wall, maintaining a peripheral seal even across bony prominences like ribs.
How does the USMC Combo Pack compare to the HyFin Vent Twin Pack?
The HyFin Vent Twin Pack (10-0037 or 10-0042 Compact) contains two vented seals, while the USMC Combo Pack contains one vented and one non-vented seal. The twin vent pack is ideal when the preference is to use vented seals for all wounds; the USMC Combo is preferred by responders who want the option to apply different seal types based on wound location. The USMC Combo seals deploy to a full 6" × 6" each, versus the 4.75" × 4.75" compact seals — providing greater coverage for larger or irregular wounds. Both products ship from MED-TAC International and are compatible with standard IFAK configurations.
Why is one seal vented and one occlusive in the same pack?
The USMC chest wound treatment protocol specifies: vented seal on the entry wound (anterior, accessible, valve can be monitored during transport) and occlusive seal on the exit wound (posterior, patient supine, where blood pooling can block a vented valve). The Combo Pack puts the two protocol-correct seals in a single package, eliminating any chance of pulling mismatched seals under stress.
How do I visually tell the vented from the occlusive seal?
The HyFin Vent has a raised valve dome visible in the center of the seal. The HyFin Chest Seal (occlusive) is completely flat with no dome or valve structure. Confirm which is which before peeling the backing — confirm vented goes to the entry wound, occlusive to the exit wound.
Can I use this if my unit doesn't run the USMC protocol?
Yes. Any provider who wants one package covering both vented and occlusive chest wound management benefits from the Combo Pack. If your protocol specifies vented for both entry and exit, order the HyFin Vent Twin Pack (10-0037) instead.
Is there an NSN for the USMC Combo Pack?
An NSN was not listed on the current NAR product page for this item. Contact MED-TAC at orders@tactical-medicine.com for current procurement documentation — we can verify the latest NSN or procurement channel for USMC Combo Pack orders. MED-TAC is SDVOSB-certified.
Does the clear resealable pouch affect the individual seal shelf life?
The clear resealable outer pouch is a storage organizer — both seals inside are individually sealed in their own Red-Tip Technology foil packaging. The individual foil seal packaging is what protects shelf life. The clear outer pouch does not affect shelf life as long as the individual foil packages remain sealed.
