What is the difference between the TacMed Vascular Access Kit and the Saline Lock Kit?
The key difference is that the TacMed™ Vascular Access Kit (MEDTAC0388) includes an IV administration set (15 drip/mL), enabling the provider to connect IV fluid bags directly after catheter placement for active fluid resuscitation. The TacMed Saline Lock Kit (MEDTAC0390) provides the saline lock components but does not include an IV admin set — it is designed for access maintenance without continuous infusion. The Vascular Access Kit is the right choice when immediate IV fluid administration is anticipated.
Does the TacMed Vascular Access Kit include IV fluids?
No. The TacMed™ Vascular Access Kit provides all components for catheter placement and IV administration except the IV fluid bag itself. The fluid (e.g., 0.9% NaCl, Lactated Ringer's, or Hextend) must be sourced separately from your medical kit or supply stock. This design keeps the kit compact and avoids including the heaviest component (a fluid bag) in a kit that is often carried as part of a standard load.
What catheter gauge and length does the kit include?
The TacMed Vascular Access Kit includes two 18-gauge × 1.25-inch IV catheters. The 18G is the standard gauge for adult peripheral IV access, providing adequate flow rate for fluid resuscitation and medication administration. Two catheters are included to allow a second cannulation attempt without returning to the supply source.
What securing methods are included to hold the IV in place?
The TacMed Vascular Access Kit includes a Tegaderm transparent film dressing and a Linebacker IV securing device for dual-mechanism catheter retention. The Tegaderm seals the insertion site while the Linebacker mechanically anchors the catheter hub. Together they provide reliable IV site securement during patient movement and transport — conditions where single-method tape securing commonly fails.
Is the TacMed Vascular Access Kit appropriate for TCCC protocols?
Yes. The TacMed Vascular Access Kit provides the components for peripheral IV access recommended under TCCC Tactical Field Care (TFC) phase guidelines for fluid resuscitation in non-hypotensive hemorrhagic shock patients. TacMed Solutions is a DoD-trusted supplier. For severely hypotensive patients or when peripheral access cannot be established, intraosseous access (SAM IO Driver system) is the recommended alternative per TCCC guidelines.
