The HAWK set combines two components: adjustable air-activated warming grids that generate active heat through a chemical reaction requiring only ambient air, and the APLS Life Guard Litter System — a portable, disposable patient transport litter with Mylar lining that reflects body heat and insulates against conductive heat loss to cold ground. Together, they create active warming above and passive insulation below, forming a thermally controlled environment around the patient during casualty care and transport.

Does the HAWK set require batteries or electrical power?

No. The air-activated warming grids generate heat through a chemical exothermic reaction triggered by exposure to ambient air — similar in principle to hand warmers but designed for medical-grade patient warming. No batteries, electrical connections, external power sources, or charging infrastructure are required. This makes the HAWK operationally reliable in the austere environments where hypothermia is most dangerous: remote wilderness, austere combat zones, disaster response areas, and vehicle evacuations where power access is limited.

When in the trauma care sequence should the HAWK be deployed?

The HAWK should be deployed following initial hemorrhage control — consistent with TCCC's approach to the lethal triad, where hypothermia prevention follows Circulation interventions. Once life-threatening bleeding is controlled, preventing hypothermia is the next priority. The warming grids and litter system should be applied during patient packaging for evacuation, where they maintain thermal protection throughout the care-to-transport transition. Why is hypothermia prevention critical in trauma patients?

Its single-use design ensures consistent performance from a sterile, undamaged litter each deployment, without the logistics burden of field decontamination and re-packing. The litter's Mylar lining maintains its reflective heat-retention properties only when intact — reusing a punctured or contaminated litter would compromise thermal performance. Disposable design is appropriate for combat and emergency medical applications.
