4" Israeli Emergency Bandage
The original all-in-one trauma pressure dressing — sterile pad, built-in pressure bar, and closure in one unit.
What is the 4" Israeli Emergency Bandage? A compact, all-in-one trauma pressure dressing manufactured by Safeguard Medical (formerly PerSys Medical / First Care Products). It combines a non-adherent sterile pad, a built-in pressure applicator, and a closure bar in a single unit — enabling effective one-handed hemorrhage control for lacerations, amputations, and penetrating wounds. Adopted by U.S. Army Rangers in 2001 and fielded by military and first responders in over 50 countries.

History & Development
Origin: in 1984, Israeli military medic Bernard Bar-Natan — who had immigrated from Brooklyn — noticed that bandages issued to IDF soldiers carried manufacture dates of 1938 and 1942, with standard guidance for non-clotting wounds being to “grab a stone and apply pressure.” He began developing a bandage with a built-in pressure applicator. After years of refinement and a government-supported technology incubator in Jerusalem's Har Hotzvim, the Emergency Bandage was commercialized by his company, First Care Products Ltd., with the first international sale in 1998 to a Belgian distributor.
The bandage earned its battlefield name when American soldiers in NATO peacekeeping operations in Bosnia began calling it the “Israeli bandage” — a nickname that stuck worldwide. Its use during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom established it as a standard of care for hemorrhage control in the U.S. military, with U.S. Army Ranger adoption in 2001 and a place in every American soldier's individual first-aid kit. Bar-Natan later sold First Care Products to PerSys Medical in Houston, Texas, which introduced the bandage to the U.S. military market; in 2019 Safeguard Medical acquired PerSys Medical, and the Emergency Bandage continues to be manufactured in the same Israeli factory by the same experienced personnel, now in Safeguard's updated grey packaging. Today, 1.5–2 million Emergency Bandages are produced annually. For more background, see the Complete IFAK Guide.
The Emergency Bandage was used by Arizona emergency responders during the 2011 Tucson shooting and appears in standard issue for military, police, fire, and EMS organizations in more than 50 countries. It has been favorably reviewed in Military Medicine and is widely cited as one of the most effective field pressure dressings in prehospital care.
Product Features
- 4" non-adherent sterile pad — lies flat against the wound without adhering to healing tissue, reducing re-bleeding and disruption at dressing changes.
- Built-in pressure applicator — a bar sewn into the bandage creates directional pressure over the wound as the elastic wraps; FDA-cleared to apply 30–40 lbs.
- Elasticized bandage — conforming elastic wraps securely around extremities, head, or torso, maintaining consistent pressure through movement and transport.
- Closure bar — fastens securely without clips or tape; operable one-handed.
- One-handed application — allows self-application to an extremity or head wound without assistance, critical in solo or remote settings.
- Compact footprint — smaller and lighter than the 6", ideal for IFAK pouches and EDC kits where a full 6" pad isn't required.
4" vs. 6" Emergency Bandage
Operating Notes
- Apply gloves if available; open the sterile package without contaminating the pad.
- The non-adherent pad seats against the wound; the elastic feeds through the pressure-applicator bar, positioned over the wound.
- The elastic wraps in a circular pattern around the limb or body area, conforming to awkward anatomy while maintaining tension.
- The closure bar secures the terminal end — no clips or tape required.
- Mark the time of application; reassess for tourniquet need if bleeding is not controlled.
