Product Overview
RTS Tactical positions these backpack armor inserts as the only Level III+ backpack defense option for travelers, students, and urban professionals who require rifle-caliber protection in a carry format that does not require donning traditional body armor. Unlike IIIA soft armor backpack panels that stop only handgun threats, the AR600 steel construction of these inserts provides NIJ 0101.06 Level III multi-hit protection — defeating 7.62×51mm M80 Ball NATO, 7.62×39mm MSC, and 5.56mm M193 rifle rounds from a backpack insert position.
AR600 steel is a hardened ballistic steel grade (600 HBW Brinell hardness) that provides complete surface defense — unlike ceramic plates that can fracture on multi-hit impacts, steel plates maintain structural integrity across multiple ballistic events. The solid slab construction means there are no laminate layers that can separate, no composite matrix that can delaminate, and no ceramic substrate to crack under thermal cycling or storage stress. The high-performance polyurea coating applied to the face of each plate captures and contains metal fragmentation (spall) that is generated when a ballistic round impacts a steel surface — a critical safety feature for any armor that will be used in close proximity to the wearer.
Three size options provide coverage flexibility: the 10" × 12" insert is the most universal, fitting most laptop sleeves and backpack side pockets; the 11" × 14" and 11" × 16.5" sizes provide larger coverage areas for operators or students who use larger packs. All three sizes slide directly into standard backpack compartments without modification, and the plates remain rigid and flat — they do not flex or flop inside the pack.
Application: EMS, Tactical, and Civilian Use
For law enforcement officers and EMS personnel who carry tactical bags or medical go-bags into active threat environments, adding an RTS Tactical Level III+ backpack insert converts a standard bag into a ballistic barrier without replacing the bag or adding a separate protective element. The insert can be used in the bag-carried position as a portable shield for point-specific body coverage, or worn with the bag against the torso. For complete ballistic and medical protection, pair with body armor systems and IFAK kits from MED-TAC International.
