PRODUCT INFORMATION

The TacMed™ IV Evaporative Cooling System (IVECS™, SKU MEDTAC0412) by Tactical Medical Solutions is a power-free, reusable IV fluid cooling pouch that keeps IV bags at a safe temperature for up to 18 hours in extreme heat. Using evaporative physics — not cold packs — it accommodates both 500 mL and 1,000 mL IV bags and can be converted into a pressure infuser with a standard blood pressure cuff. NSN: 6515-01-530-7024.

Product Overview

Administration of IV fluids heated above 52.2°C (126°F) can damage tissue and red blood cells. In desert environments like Iraq and Afghanistan — where ambient temperatures routinely exceed 54°C (130°F) — IV bags stored on vehicles or in medical kits will quickly reach dangerous temperatures without active cooling. The TacMed™ IVECS addresses this threat with a power-free, evaporative cooling approach that requires nothing more than water and ambient airflow.

The IVECS operates on the physics of evaporation: water absorbed into the pouch material transitions from liquid to vapor, drawing heat energy from the IV bag in the process. This is not a heat-transfer system that requires a pre-chilled pack — the only preparation required is soaking the pouch for approximately 15 minutes before inserting the IV bag. Field tests conducted by USAMRMC (U.S. Army Medical Research & Materiel Command) demonstrated that a standard IV bag stored in the IVECS reached only 43.3°C (110°F) after 2.5 hours in a 54°C / 5% humidity environment with no wind, compared to the control bag which reached the 54°C ambient temperature in the same period. Over the 13.5-hour test, the IVECS bag peaked at 50°C — four degrees below the recommended maximum temperature for IV fluid administration.

As a dual-function device, the IVECS can also be used as a pressure infuser: wrapping a standard blood pressure cuff around the outside of the fluid-filled IVECS allows rapid pressurized infusion when gravity-drip rates are insufficient. This versatility makes the IVECS a valuable addition to any austere-environment medical kit where fluid temperature management and rapid infusion capability are priorities.
