Product Overview
Gauze wound packing remains a first-line intervention in the hemorrhage control sequence — between tourniquet-inaccessible wounds and hemostatic agent deployment. The quality of the packaging is not a trivial detail: under stress, with bloody gloves, in darkness, a gauze that unfurls chaotically from its pack or slips from the provider's grip can cost seconds that patients don't have.
The 6:8 Medical Solutions Compact Z-Fold Gauze addresses this with a patented Surgrip™ packaging system. The textured, ergonomic outer surface provides a secure, slip-free grip regardless of glove type or fluid contamination. The Z-fold configuration enables controlled, sequential deployment — the gauze feeds consistently from the pack without tangling, allowing the provider to maintain direct pressure with one hand while deploying gauze with the other.
At 4.5 inches wide and 4.1 yards long, this gauze is sized for serious wound packing: sufficient to fill most extremity wounds, axillary injuries, or junctional bleeding sites. The compact packaged dimensions (4.5" × 9.75" × 1.5") allow integration into standard IFAK slots, cargo pockets, or CAT/tourniquet pouches without reorganizing the full kit. The 5-year shelf life ensures combat-stockable reliability.
Wound Packing Protocol (TCCC Context)
Per Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) guidelines, wound packing is indicated for wounds not amenable to tourniquet application (junctional, neck, axillary) and as a complement to hemostatic agents in deep wound cavities. The 6:8 Compact Z-Fold Gauze supports the following sequence:
- Apply direct pressure and expose the wound
- Remove the Z-fold gauze from Surgrip™ packaging (one-handed capable)
- Pack tightly into wound cavity, directing gauze to bleeding source
- Apply firm, continuous pressure for minimum 3 minutes
- Secure with pressure bandage; reassess for continued hemorrhage
- Can be used as base layer before hemostatic gauze application
