Product Overview
The NIO® Intraosseous Device provides rapid vascular access in emergency situations when peripheral IV cannulation is not possible — but insertion alone is only half the equation. A properly secured IO catheter with a functional extension set and stopcock is required to deliver medications, fluids, and blood products effectively. The Go IO Intraosseous Start Kit provides this complete post-insertion assembly in a single, pre-packaged sterile kit.
The NIO Fixation Securement Dressing anchors the NIO device to the skin surface, preventing rotational movement or axial dislodgment during patient movement, CASEVAC, or airway management procedures. The NeedleVISE™ Sharps Safety Block addresses a critical safety concern: after NIO removal, the exposed needle tip represents a needlestick hazard. The NeedleVISE safely captures and contains the sharp, enabling disposal without risk to providers in the chaos of a trauma scene.
The IV extension set with a 90° connector solves a geometry problem inherent to IO access: the needle hub sits close to the bone surface with limited clearance for standard straight connectors. The 90° angle routes tubing away from the insertion site without creating leverage forces on the hub. The three-way stopcock enables multiple simultaneous access ports — critical for providers needing to administer medications, fluids, and blood through the same IO site.
Safeguard Medical recommends the Go IO kit with every NIO insertion. Stocking the NIO device without the Go IO kit leaves the provider without the tools needed to convert the IO access into a functional, secured vascular line — a gap that can compromise the clinical benefit of achieving IO access in the first place.
IO Access: Clinical Context
Intraosseous access is a non-collapsible vascular route that provides rapid, reliable systemic drug and fluid delivery when peripheral IV access cannot be obtained in time-critical emergencies. The proximal tibia, proximal humerus, and distal tibia are standard IO insertion sites accessible in adults and pediatric patients. Medications administered via IO route achieve pharmacokinetics equivalent to IV administration, making IO an accepted TCCC and ACLS alternative to peripheral IV access. Maximum IO dwell time is 24 hours.
