What is the HME Filter? A passive Heat and Moisture Exchanger that captures heat and moisture from the patient’s exhaled breath and returns it on the next inspiration — substituting for the upper airway’s natural conditioning function that mechanical ventilation bypasses. It is the OEM-specified filter for the SAVe II family and requires no external heat or humidity source.

What It Is
Mechanical ventilation bypasses the upper airway’s natural humidification system — the nose and nasopharynx that normally warm and humidify inspired air before it reaches the lower airway. In ventilated patients, particularly during extended prehospital transport or field-hospital operations, the absence of humidification leads to progressive drying of the airway mucosa, thickening of secretions, and increased risk of airway obstruction. HME filters address this passively: they capture the heat and moisture the patient exhales and return it to the next inspired breath.
The SAVe II / II+ HME Filter (SKU E32113-10) is the manufacturer-specified HME filter for Safeguard Medical’s SAVe II family. Using the OEM filter ensures compatibility with the breathing-circuit geometry and resistance parameters the SAVe II / II+ was validated against. It is available in a case of 10 to simplify resupply procurement for medical units, hospitals, or emergency-management agencies maintaining a SAVe II+ inventory.
HME filters are single-patient consumables and must be replaced according to the manufacturer’s protocol.
