Product Overview

Burnshield® is a South African–engineered burn care product that has achieved wide international adoption across EMS, military, industrial safety, and mining sectors. The Fire Blanket combines a 100% wool carrier with Burnshield's signature hydrogel — a 96% water formula enhanced with Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree) Oil, a natural antimicrobial known for its bacteriostatic and anti-inflammatory properties. This unique formulation gives Burnshield a natural infection control advantage alongside its thermal management capabilities.

The blanket operates through a heat absorption and dissipation mechanism: the gel-saturated wool draws thermal energy from the burn wound rapidly and dissipates it across the large surface area of the blanket. This process minimizes the burn depth by halting ongoing thermal injury — the clinical principle that the wound continues to "cook" for minutes after flame contact ceases. By rapidly removing heat at the wound surface, Burnshield limits the extension of injury from the epidermis into the dermis and deeper structures.

A key clinical feature of Burnshield is its transparency: the hydrogel is clear, allowing providers to assess the wound's extent, color, depth indicators, and surrounding tissue condition without removing the dressing. This enables ongoing triage and assessment during transport without disrupting the sterile wound environment. The non-stick contact surface ensures painless removal at the receiving facility, preserving fragile epithelial tissue and minimizing wound disruption during the transfer of care.

Clinical Properties

Property Clinical Benefit
Heat Absorption & Dissipation Minimizes burn depth progression; stops ongoing thermal injury
Sustained Cooling Provides pain relief and reduces the neurogenic shock response to burns
Natural Anti-Bacterial (Tea Tree Oil) Reduces infection risk; natural antimicrobial requires no synthetic agents
Wound Transparency Enables wound assessment without dressing removal; supports ongoing triage
Non-Adherent Contact Painless removal; no disruption of fragile new epithelium

Application Instructions

  1. Open the foil pouch and remove the blanket
  2. Apply the gel-soaked surface directly to the burned area
  3. Use to shield the patient from ongoing flame exposure if present
  4. Leave in place for transport — assess wound through the transparent hydrogel without removal
