Product Overview
Side plate protection is the final frontier of comprehensive ballistic coverage. While front and rear 10"×12" plates protect the vital core, the lateral torso — which contains the liver, spleen, kidneys, and descending aorta — remains exposed unless side plates are installed. The VISM Level III+ Ballistic Side Hard Plate addresses this gap in a flat 6"×6" square format that fits the standard side plate pockets built into most modern plate carriers and armor vests.
At approximately 1.07 lbs per plate, a pair of VISM side plates adds only about 2.1 lbs of total carried weight — a modest penalty given the significant anatomical zones they protect. The UHMWPE construction keeps this weight as low as possible while still delivering independently tested Level III+ ballistic performance, including rated protection against 7.62×51mm NATO (the standard NATO battle rifle round). UHMWPE also eliminates the spall fragmentation risk associated with steel side plates, which is particularly relevant for lateral body coverage where fragmentation could strike the arms or face.
The flat 6"×6" square geometry maximizes coverage within the typical square or rectangular side plate pocket. Unlike curved side plates (available separately), the flat BPSD66 does not conform to the body's lateral curvature, which means there will be a gap between the plate face and the body at the edges. Why Side Plates Matter: Lateral Anatomy Protection
- Liver — Right side, below the lower ribs. A penetrating rifle wound to the liver is often rapidly fatal.
- Spleen — Left side, under the lower ribs. Highly vascular; splenic lacerations cause severe hemorrhage.
- Kidneys — Bilateral, posterior-lateral aspect. Major arterial supply; renal injury is a significant cause of preventable trauma death.
- Descending aorta — Left lateral. Aortic injury is almost universally fatal without immediate surgical intervention.
