FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the NAR Individual Aid Kit appropriate for untrained bystanders?
Yes. The Individual Aid Kit is specifically designed for non-medically trained caregivers. Its contents — compressed gauze, flat ETD™, petrolatum gauze, tape, and gloves — require minimal training to use effectively for basic wound coverage and pressure application. North American Rescue and MED-TAC recommend pairing this kit with Stop the Bleed training for maximum effectiveness.
Does the Individual Aid Kit include a tourniquet?
No. The Individual Aid Kit does not include a tourniquet. It is designed for wound coverage and basic bleeding control using pressure dressings and gauze. For life-threatening extremity hemorrhage (arterial bleeding), a tourniquet is required. If tourniquet capability is needed, consider the NAR Individual Patrol Officer Kit (IPOK), EDC Wallet Kit, or a full IFAK.
What is petrolatum gauze and when is it used?
Petrolatum gauze is gauze impregnated with petroleum jelly (petrolatum). It creates a non-adherent, moisture-retentive dressing that can serve as an improvised occlusive covering for penetrating wounds, including chest wounds where a proper chest seal is not available. It is not a substitute for a purpose-made vented chest seal but provides basic wound coverage for abdominal, thoracic, or penetrating extremity wounds in a minimal kit.
Is the Individual Aid Kit vacuum-sealed?
Yes. The Individual Aid Kit is vacuum-sealed in a clear package that protects contents from moisture, debris, and contamination. The clear packaging allows visual confirmation of kit contents without opening it — useful for regular inspection without consuming the kit. Opening the seal deploys the kit for use.
Where is the Individual Aid Kit best deployed?
The NAR Individual Aid Kit is best suited for public access locations: schools, office buildings, community centers, churches, sporting events, and vehicles. It provides basic bleeding control capability for first responders (bystanders) until trained EMS arrives. For higher-risk environments or tactical applications, a tourniquet-equipped kit is strongly recommended.
