What are TacMed Control Wraps and how are they different from standard elastic bandages?
TacMed™ Control Wraps are elastic compression bandages by Tactical Medical Solutions® engineered with built-in adhesive brake strips that prevent accidental unrolling during application — a failure mode that standard elastic bandages are prone to under combat stress, angle changes, or one-handed application. Available in 4" (CW4) and 6" (CW6) widths, they serve as a supporting secondary bandage used over primary hemostatic or pressure dressings to secure and maintain wound compression. The anti-unroll brake design is the same technology used in TacMed's OLAES® and BLAST® bandages.
How does the anti-unroll brake system work?
Adhesive brakes are integrated into the elastic weave at intervals along the bandage length. They perform two simultaneous functions: they mechanically lock the roll in place if accidentally released during application — preventing the roll from unwinding and contaminating or wasting the bandage — and they create tactile grip surfaces that allow the provider to maintain controlled tension while changing application angles. This is particularly valuable when wrapping anatomically irregular sites such as the shoulder, axilla, groin, or residual limb after amputation, where direction changes are unavoidable and slip risk with standard bandages is high.
When should I use a 4" Control Wrap versus a 6" Control Wrap?
The 4" Control Wrap is best suited for arm and forearm wounds, lower leg and ankle injuries, head and scalp wound dressing retention, pediatric extremities, and supplemental wrapping in individual IFAKs where space is limited. The 6" Control Wrap is preferred for thigh and upper leg wounds, abdominal and torso dressing retention, shoulder and chest wall applications, and larger body habitus extremity wraps. The 4" version is specifically used in TacMed™ ARK Casualty Throw Kits for active shooter responses, where its anti-unroll design makes it deployable by untrained bystanders following basic written instructions.
What primary dressings are the Control Wraps designed to work with?
The TacMed™ Control Wraps are designed as universal supporting bandages compatible with any primary hemostatic or pressure dressing, including the Israeli Emergency Bandage, OLAES® Modular Bandage, BLAST® Bandage, QuikClot gauze, Kerlix rolled gauze, and wound packing applications where additional circumferential pressure is needed to secure the packing in place. The Control Wrap provides dressing-retention compression without requiring continuous manual holding or tape, which is especially valuable in self-aid situations where both hands may not be free.
Are TacMed Control Wraps single-use, and how should they be stored?
Yes — TacMed™ Control Wraps are single-use disposable elastic bandages. They should be stored in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and extreme heat, which can degrade elasticity and adhesive brake function over time. When carried in an IFAK or trauma kit, they should be in their original sealed packaging until deployment. As with all elastomeric bandages, pre-deployment training rolls — used in practice drills — should be tracked separately and replaced with new sealed units for operational kits to ensure adhesive integrity and elastic performance at the point of need.
