Product Overview
The RTS Tactical Level IV Plate 10"×12" is the flagship hard armor offering from one of America's most widely deployed law enforcement armor manufacturers. At 6.3 lbs in the 10"×12" format and 1.1" thickness, it occupies the high-performance tier of Level IV ceramic plates: substantial enough to stop armor-piercing rifle fire, compact enough to fit standard plate carrier pockets, and light enough for sustained operational wear without the fatigue accumulation of heavier steel or thick composite plates.
Ceramic hard armor operates on a fundamentally different mechanism than soft armor or steel armor. The ceramic strike face — composed of small ceramic squares bonded over a polyethylene matrix backer — is engineered to shatter on projectile impact. This shattering is not a failure mode; it is the designed energy-dissipation mechanism. As the bullet strikes the ceramic face, the ceramic fractures and the energy of the round is distributed across the fracture zone, deforming or shattering the bullet and transferring the dissipated energy to the PE matrix backer. The backer captures the deformed projectile and limits the back face deformation (BFD) — the inward indentation of the plate toward the wearer's body — to safe limits. Zero spalling design ensures that ceramic fragments from the strike face do not become secondary projectiles behind the plate.
RTS Tactical's application of a waterproof polyurea coating on the plate exterior addresses one of the traditional vulnerabilities of ceramic armor: moisture sensitivity. Uncoated ceramic plates can absorb moisture over time, which can degrade ballistic performance through micro-fracturing of the ceramic matrix. The polyurea coating creates a sealed, water-impermeable exterior surface that maintains plate integrity through rain, perspiration, and humid storage environments over the plate's 5-year service life. Some RTS Tactical variants include an additional impact-resistant foam face layer to protect the ceramic from damage if the plate is dropped — a practical consideration for plates that may be handled under field conditions.
Level IV: The Highest NIJ Rating
NIJ Standard 0101.06 Level IV is the highest protection level in the NIJ body armor classification framework. To achieve Level IV certification, a plate must withstand a minimum of one hit from a .30-06 M2 AP (armor-piercing) round — a 166-grain steel-core projectile traveling at approximately 2,880 ft/s. This is the hardest standard test threat in the NIJ system, and plates that pass this test simultaneously provide protection against lower-energy rifle threats including 5.56mm M855 steel-penetrator, 5.56mm M193, 7.62×51mm M80, and 7.62×39mm MSC rounds.
- 5.56mm M855 (green tip): Standard M16/AR-15 service ammunition with steel penetrator — stopped by Level IV
- 5.56mm M193: Original 5.56mm ball ammunition
- .308 Winchester / 7.62×51mm M80: Battle rifle and light machine gun round
- 7.62×39mm MSC: AK-47/AKM standard ball — stopped by Level IV ceramic
- .30-06 M2 AP: NIJ Level IV test round — armor-piercing steel core, highest standard test threat
Multi-Hit Performance
The RTS Tactical Level IV ceramic plate is designed for multi-hit capability within the operating area. The small-ceramic-square architecture — individual ceramic tiles rather than a monolithic ceramic slab — is engineered so that impact damage from one hit is localized to the immediately surrounding tiles, preserving the ballistic integrity of adjacent zones. This means a plate that has stopped one round retains meaningful protection in areas not directly adjacent to the first impact. While no plate provides indefinite multi-hit performance, the tile construction and PE matrix system provide better post-impact utility than monolithic ceramic designs.
