Product Overview

SAM IO Needles are the sterile, single-use consumable component of the SAM IO Intraosseous Access System. Engineered with a patented 5-point grind needle tip, each needle is designed to penetrate cortical bone efficiently when driven by the SAM IO Driver's ratcheting mechanism. The color-coded hubs and depth indication markers adhere to industry standards, making size identification fast and intuitive — even for providers transitioning from other IO systems.

Each needle assembly consists of a stylet and catheter secured by a snap-fit connection. The snap-fit holds the stylet in position during insertion, preventing premature separation. Once the needle reaches the correct depth in the medullary cavity, the stylet is removed, exposing the catheter's standard Luer-lock port for connection via the SAM IO Adaptor (MEDTAC1061). Each needle package also includes a NeedleVISE® block — a single-use sharp containment device that captures the stylet after withdrawal — and an extension tube for immediate connection to infusion sets or syringes.

SAM IO Needles can also be inserted manually by hand without the driver in emergencies, providing an additional backup insertion method. Application sites for the SAM IO system include the proximal humerus, proximal tibia, distal tibia, and distal femur (pediatric only). Sternal access is not indicated for this system.

What needle sizes are available for the SAM IO Driver?

SAM IO Needles are available in three 15-gauge lengths: 15 mm (MEDTAC1056), 25 mm (MEDTAC1057), and 45 mm (MEDTAC1058). The 15 mm is appropriate for pediatric patients or thin-framed adults at tibial sites with minimal soft tissue. The 25 mm is the standard adult size for most proximal tibia and proximal humerus applications. The 45 mm is indicated for obese patients or adult proximal humerus access where greater soft tissue depth must be cleared. Each size is available individually or in packs of five.

Can SAM IO Needles be inserted without the SAM IO Driver?

Yes. SAM IO Needles feature a 5-point grind tip geometry that allows them to be manually inserted by hand in emergency situations when the SAM IO Driver is unavailable. Manual insertion requires firm, controlled downward rotational pressure to penetrate the cortical bone. While the driver provides better control and tactile feedback, the hand-insertion option provides a critical backup for provider redundancy during IO access under field conditions.

What is the NeedleVISE that comes with each needle?

The NeedleVISE® is a single-use sharps containment block included in each sterile SAM IO Needle package. After IO needle placement and successful access, the stylet is removed from the catheter. The NeedleVISE captures and contains the sharp stylet, preventing accidental needle-stick injury during the post-insertion phase when the provider is focused on aspiration, flushing, and infusion setup. It is a key safety element in the SAM IO system designed for rapid single-handed use.

Are SAM IO Needles color-coded?

Yes. SAM IO Needles use color-coded hubs that adhere to IO industry standards: the 15 mm needle hub is pink/white, the 25 mm is blue, and the 45 mm is yellow. Depth indication markers on the shaft provide additional confirmation of insertion depth. The color system allows providers familiar with other IO platforms to adopt the SAM IO without relearning size identification schemes.

Are SAM IO Needles compatible with other IO drivers?

No. SAM IO Needles are designed exclusively for use with the SAM IO Driver (30-0255 / IO700-EN). The snap-fit connection mechanism and the needle's ratchet-engagement geometry are proprietary to the SAM IO system. They are not compatible with EZ-IO drills, FAST-1, BIG, or other IO platforms. Always match the correct needle to the correct driver system.
