North American Rescue — Pressure Bandage

Stump / Abdominal Emergency Trauma Dressing

The largest ETD — a 12″ × 12″ non-adherent pad on a 6″ wrap with 70″ of length for amputation stumps, eviscerations, and large burns.

12″ × 12″ pad6″ wrap70″ length5 oz

Traumatic amputation stumps, abdominal eviscerations, and large trunk burns present injury areas that conventional bandages simply cannot cover. A femoral-level amputation stump alone needs substantial circumferential coverage that a standard pad cannot deliver.

What covers a wound that's measured in square feet, not square inches?

The Stump/Abdominal ETD™ is the largest-format dressing in the NAR ETD family — a 12″ × 12″ (144 sq in) non-adherent sterile pad on a 6″ elastic wrap with 70″ of length. It is purpose-built for amputation stumps, evisceration management, and large burn coverage, with the same durable no-pressure-bar securing device and Red-Tip Technology access as the rest of the family.

Maximum-Coverage Dressing

12″ × 12″ Pad (144 sq in)

Complete coverage for amputation stumps, abdominal wound areas, and large burn surfaces in a single application.

6″ × 70″ Elastic Wrap

Sized for substantial circumferential coverage and multiple secure passes around large sites.

Gross-Motor Securing Device

No pressure bars, no hooks — correct application with gloves, one hand, under stress.

Evisceration-Appropriate

Non-adherent pad placed without pressure over exposed tissue; wrap gently secures without compressing organs.

Application by Presentation

For abdominal eviscerations: place the non-adherent pad over the eviscerated tissue without pressure, then use the elastic wrap to gently secure the dressing without compressing exposed organs. For amputation stumps: center the pad over the stump end, apply the wrap circumferentially with firm tension, and lock with the securing device for transport. For large burns: the non-adherent pad protects wound-surface integrity during transport without adhering to the wound bed.

When To Use It

  • context: Junctional and abdominal hemorrhage at point of injury — STUMP ETD provides an extra-large occlusive surface for wounds not amenable to tourniquet application.
  • context: Blast and fragmentation wounds with large wound surface — 12-inch ETD size covers extensive tissue damage at torso, groin, or axilla.
  • context: Packing anchor for junctional wounds — ETD is applied over packed wound to maintain pressure and prevent gauze displacement during evacuation.
  • context: Abdominal evisceration management — the STUMP dressing provides the large sterile occlusive surface for managing exposed abdominal contents.
Best practice: Apply the STUMP ETD with firm, sustained pressure — the pressure applicator distributes force across the wound surface; maintain 3 minutes minimum hold before securing.

How It Compares

STUMP ETD vs. standard 4-inch or 6-inch ETD: The STUMP ETD is larger-format for abdominal and large wound surfaces; standard ETDs are sized for extremity and smaller wounds. Carry both for complete wound coverage capability. See hemorrhage control.

STUMP ETD vs. Combat Gauze for abdominal wounds: Combat Gauze is for junctional wound packing; the STUMP ETD provides the occlusive pressure dressing applied over the packed wound. They are complementary — pack with Combat Gauze, then apply STUMP ETD. See hemostatic agents.

STUMP ETD vs. junctional tourniquet: Junctional tourniquets (SAM-JT, JETT) are for groin/axilla/junctional arterial hemorrhage; the STUMP ETD addresses the larger wound surface that remains after hemorrhage control. They address different components of the junctional wound problem. See bandages and dressings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the STUMP Abdominal Emergency Trauma Dressing CoTCCC-recommended?

A: Junctional and abdominal hemorrhage control is addressed in CoTCCC guidelines for wounds not amenable to tourniquet or standard pressure dressing. The STUMP ETD is an emergency trauma dressing designed for the large wound surfaces presented by abdominal and junctional injuries.

Q: What training is required to use the STUMP ETD?

A: Wound packing and pressure dressing application are TCCC Combat Lifesaver skills and above. For junctional wounds (groin, axilla, neck), the CoTCCC-recommended interventions (junctional tourniquet or wound packing with pressure dressing) require CLS or higher training.

Q: What is the difference between the STUMP ETD and a standard 4-inch ETD?

A: The STUMP ETD is a larger-format emergency trauma dressing designed for abdominal and large wound surfaces — the 'STUMP' designation indicates its specific application in stumps and large trauma wounds. Standard 4-inch and 6-inch ETDs are sized for extremity and smaller wound applications.

Q: What is the NSN for the STUMP Abdominal Emergency Trauma Dressing?

A: Contact NAR or MED-TAC International for current NSN and GSA procurement information. The STUMP ETD is available through MED-TAC's hemorrhage control and bandages/dressings collections.

Q: Can the STUMP ETD be used as a pressure dressing after wound packing?

A: Yes. The STUMP ETD can be applied over a packed wound to maintain pressure and secure the packing during casualty movement. Apply immediately after packing while the provider or casualty maintains manual pressure, then secure the dressing tails to maintain force.
