First, the Silicon Carbide ceramic strike face — a premium armor ceramic with Mohs hardness approximately 9.5 — fractures and disrupts the incoming projectile core on contact. For steel-core penetrators (M855 Green Tip, 7.62×39mm MSC, etc.), this ceramic defeat stage is essential: pure UHMWPE plates cannot reliably defeat hardened steel penetrators because the PE fibers lack sufficient hardness to stop the core from drilling through.
