MED-TAC International's Backpack Armor collection features discreet, NIJ Level IIIA soft armor panels engineered to fit inside everyday carry bags, student backpacks, laptop bags, and commuter packs. These lightweight ballistic inserts provide covert handgun-threat protection without altering the appearance or usability of the carrier bag. Panels are tested to NIJ standards. Clinician-founded. Sourced from authorized manufacturers.
What Is Backpack Armor and How Does It Work?
Backpack armor consists of soft ballistic panels — typically constructed from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) or woven aramid fiber (Kevlar or Dyneema) — that slide into the back compartment or laptop sleeve of a standard bag. When worn correctly, the panel provides coverage of the user's torso from behind. In an active threat scenario where the bag is held in front of the body, it provides frontal coverage as a ballistic shield. NIJ Level IIIA panels defeat handgun rounds up to .44 Magnum, including 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .357 Magnum. They are not rated to stop rifle rounds. For rifle-rated protection, see Hard Armor Ballistic Plates.
How Are Backpack Armor Panels Tested and Rated?
All ballistic panels in this collection are tested to NIJ Standard 0101.06 (or current NIJ 0101.07 equivalent) at a NIJ-accredited ballistics laboratory. NIJ Level IIIA is the highest soft armor protection level, requiring the panel to defeat 9mm FMJ at 1,470 ft/s and .44 Magnum SJHP at 1,430 ft/s with back face deformation within specified limits. The NIJ Compliant Products List (CPL) is the authoritative reference for verified compliant armor. MED-TAC stocks panels from manufacturers on or building to the CPL. Panel dimensions, weight, and thickness are specified in each product listing to confirm fit with your carrier bag.

Who Should Carry Backpack Armor?
Backpack armor is appropriate for students at all grade levels (with parental discretion for younger ages), college students in active campus environments, commuters who travel through high-traffic urban areas, educators and school staff, healthcare workers in hospital or clinical environments, and any individual who wants discreet, everyday ballistic protection without printing or announcing the presence of protective gear. These panels are legal to carry in all 50 U.S. states for civilians. For full-coverage protection, combine a backpack panel with products from the Soft Ballistic Armor Panels collection.
