MED-TAC International's Backpack Armor collection features discreet, NIJ Level IIIA soft armor panels engineered to fit inside everyday carry bags, student backpacks, laptop bags, and commuter packs. These lightweight ballistic inserts provide covert handgun-threat protection without altering the appearance or usability of the carrier bag. Panels are tested to NIJ standards. Clinician-founded. Sourced from authorized manufacturers.

What Is Backpack Armor and How Does It Work?

Backpack armor consists of soft ballistic panels — typically constructed from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) or woven aramid fiber (Kevlar or Dyneema) — that slide into the back compartment or laptop sleeve of a standard bag. When worn correctly, the panel provides coverage of the user's torso from behind. In an active threat scenario where the bag is held in front of the body, it provides frontal coverage as a ballistic shield. NIJ Level IIIA panels defeat handgun rounds up to .44 Magnum, including 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .357 Magnum. They are not rated to stop rifle rounds. For rifle-rated protection, see Hard Armor Ballistic Plates.

How Are Backpack Armor Panels Tested and Rated?

All ballistic panels in this collection are tested to NIJ Standard 0101.06 (or current NIJ 0101.07 equivalent) at a NIJ-accredited ballistics laboratory. NIJ Level IIIA is the highest soft armor protection level, requiring the panel to defeat 9mm FMJ at 1,470 ft/s and .44 Magnum SJHP at 1,430 ft/s with back face deformation within specified limits. The NIJ Compliant Products List (CPL) is the authoritative reference for verified compliant armor. MED-TAC stocks panels from manufacturers on or building to the CPL. Panel dimensions, weight, and thickness are specified in each product listing to confirm fit with your carrier bag.

What Size Backpack Armor Panel Do I Need?

Panel Size Dimensions (approx.) Best Fit Common Bag Types
Small 8.5" × 11" – 9" × 12" Youth / teen Elementary/middle school backpacks, sling bags
Medium 10" × 13" – 11" × 14" Adult / standard laptop 13"–15" laptop backpacks, commuter bags
Large 11" × 14" – 12" × 16" Adult / large frame 15"–17" laptop backpacks, tactical daypacks

Who Should Carry Backpack Armor?

Backpack armor is appropriate for students at all grade levels (with parental discretion for younger ages), college students in active campus environments, commuters who travel through high-traffic urban areas, educators and school staff, healthcare workers in hospital or clinical environments, and any individual who wants discreet, everyday ballistic protection without printing or announcing the presence of protective gear. These panels are legal to carry in all 50 U.S. states for civilians. For full-coverage protection, combine a backpack panel with products from the Soft Ballistic Armor Panels collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will backpack armor stop rifle rounds?+
No. NIJ Level IIIA soft armor panels — including all backpack armor in this collection — are rated for handgun threats only. They will not stop 5.56mm, 7.62mm, or other rifle calibers. For rifle-rated protection, you need hard armor plates (Level III or Level IV) in a plate carrier or ballistic shield. Soft armor panels can be layered with hard plates in certain configurations, but backpack-format inserts are inherently soft armor solutions.
How do I measure my bag for a backpack armor panel?+
Measure the internal dimensions of your bag's back compartment or laptop sleeve — width and height in inches. Purchase a panel that is 1/2" to 1" smaller than the compartment dimensions in both directions to allow for easy insertion and removal. Panels that are too large will not fit flat and may deform the bag. Panels that are too small leave uncovered areas. The product listing for each panel specifies dimensions; compare directly to your bag's compartment measurements.
Is backpack armor legal to carry in schools?+
Backpack armor (soft armor panels inside a bag) is not a weapon and is generally not regulated by weapons laws or school weapon policies in the U.S. No federal law prohibits students from carrying ballistic backpack panels. Some school districts may have policies regarding ballistic inserts — check with your specific school or district administration. In all 50 states, possession of soft body armor by law-abiding citizens (including students) is legal, with the narrow exception of Connecticut, which restricts online purchases of body armor.
How long do soft armor panels last before needing replacement?+
Most soft armor panel manufacturers warrant their products for 5 years from date of manufacture. Aramid fiber (Kevlar) and UHMWPE performance degrades with UV exposure, moisture, heat cycling, and physical compression. Store panels in their original packaging or a protective sleeve away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Replace immediately if the panel is subjected to a ballistic impact, shows signs of delamination, has compromised stitching, or has exceeded the manufacturer's warranty period. Always check the manufacture date label on the panel.
Can backpack armor be used as a ballistic shield in an active shooter event?+
A backpack with an inserted Level IIIA panel can provide limited frontal protection when held in front of the body, functioning as a makeshift ballistic shield against handgun rounds. However, it provides significantly less coverage than a purpose-built ballistic shield and offers no protection to limbs or sides. The primary function of backpack armor is passive torso protection when worn normally on the back. Active use as a hand-held shield is a last-resort application. For purpose-built shield options, see MED-TAC's Ballistic Shields collection.
