Product Overview
Penetrating eye injury (PEI) is one of the leading causes of preventable vision loss in both combat and law enforcement contexts. Battlefield statistics from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom showed that ocular injuries accounted for a disproportionate percentage of disfiguring wounds, driving demand for a compact, deployable eye protection solution that medics could carry at the point of injury. Safeguard Medical answered that need with the Combat Eye Shield — designed in direct collaboration with active-duty military surgeons of OIF/OEF.
The Combat Eye Shield's patented construction (Design Patent No. D674,903) combines two key elements: an aluminum fox eye shield that provides rigid, non-contact protection over the orbit, and a 6-inch Hydrogel adhesive disc that creates an exceptionally large, gentle contact surface for attachment. This large surface area is critical when treating adjacent facial trauma, burns, or lacerations where traditional rigid tape or adhesive would adhere poorly or cause additional injury. The Hydrogel disc maintains secure adhesion across a wide range of skin conditions without harming surrounding wound tissue.
Each package includes a 4" × 4" gauze pad for gentle surface cleansing prior to application — an important step for ensuring proper Hydrogel adhesion when blood or debris is present. The entire assembly is vacuum sealed and sterile, ready for immediate deployment without additional preparation steps. Notably, the Combat Eye Shield contains no natural rubber latex, making it safe for use on patients with latex allergies — a consideration that often matters in emergency settings where allergy history is unknown.
Application in the Field
- Do not apply pressure to the globe. Never press directly on a penetrating eye injury — this can extrude intraocular contents and worsen prognosis.
- Open the vacuum-sealed package and remove the gauze pad.
- Gently clean the periorbital skin area with the included 4" × 4" gauze — remove excess blood or debris without disturbing the injured eye.
- Peel the backing from the Hydrogel disc and center the aluminum fox shield over the orbit, ensuring no contact with the globe.
- Press the Hydrogel ring gently against the periorbital skin to secure the shield.
- Do not cover the uninjured eye — binocular movement causes sympathetic movement in the injured eye.
- Mark the casualty card and evacuate for ophthalmologic care as soon as tactically feasible.
CoTCCC Guidelines Context
TCCC guidelines recognize penetrating eye trauma as a Category 3 (Can Wait) injury in most tactical situations, where the priority remains hemorrhage control and airway management. However, appropriate ocular coverage during the evacuation phase remains important to protect against infection, further contamination, and mechanical damage during casualty movement. The Combat Eye Shield's compact size (3.25" × 8" × 0.5") allows it to be included in virtually any IFAK without displacing higher-priority hemorrhage control items.
