Product Overview

The QUANTUM Blood & Fluid Warming System was engineered by North American Rescue to close a critical capability gap in far-forward trauma care: the ability to administer warmed blood and IV fluids at the point of injury without inducing hypothermia. Hypothermia is a recognized component of the "lethal triad" (along with acidosis and coagulopathy) and significantly increases mortality in hemorrhagic shock patients. By delivering blood at 100.4°F ± 2°C from a cold start in just 24 seconds, the QUANTUM enables medics to begin warm-blood resuscitation earlier in the care continuum — during Tactical Field Care or Prolonged Field Care (PFC) — where traditional warming approaches are unavailable.

The system's architecture is uniquely efficient. The thermal tubing sets (Thermal Transfusion Set–Blood, TTS-B, or Thermal Infusion Set, TIS) incorporate conductive heating elements extruded between the inner and outer tubing walls, completely outside the fluid path. Thermistors along the tubing continuously report temperatures to the 3-oz controller, which dynamically adjusts energy delivery from the 44V lithium battery to ensure consistent normothermic output regardless of input fluid temperature or flow rate. This means a medic can spike a refrigerated blood bag, connect the controller cable with either end (no plug orientation required), and be ready to transfuse in under 30 seconds — with no additional standard transfusion set required.

The QUANTUM is the only portable blood warmer that is FDA cleared to allow disabling of audible alerts for covert tactical operations. It operates on a single 44V rechargeable battery and, from a full charge, can warm two full 450 mL units of blood stored at 39°F, or approximately 1,700 mL of room-temperature IV fluid. The complete system — controller, battery, and two TTS-B sets — totals just 22 oz, making it the lightest operational blood warming system in its category.

How to Set Up the QUANTUM System

1. Spike and prime the thermal tubing set — connect to the fluid source (blood bag or IV bag) and the patient's vascular access, and prime the line as you would a standard IV set.
2. Connect the controller to the battery — connect the controller cable to the thermal tubing set; the system powers on automatically.
3. Await warmup signal — the system provides status indication (green flash → blue flash → solid green when at temperature) within 24 seconds. In tactical settings, audible alerts can be disabled.
4. Begin infusion — open the line and administer blood or fluids at the desired flow rate (2–100 mL/min for blood; up to 200 mL/min for IV fluids).

Clinical Context: Blood Warming and Hypothermia Prevention

Cold blood resuscitation — transfusing whole blood stored at 39°F without warming — contributes directly to hypothermia in the trauma patient. Field studies from austere and combat environments consistently show that even brief administration of cold blood products reduces core temperature and exacerbates coagulopathy. The QUANTUM was developed in direct response to Joint Theater Trauma System guidelines and is part of North American Rescue's Prolonged Field Care product portfolio. The system is compatible with whole blood, freeze-dried plasma (FDP) reconstituted product, packed red blood cells, and standard isotonic crystalloids.
