Tactical Medical Solutions

TacMed Solutions™ — operating as Tactical Medical Solutions — is a U.S.-based manufacturer and developer of prehospital trauma care equipment founded in 2003 by Ross Johnson, a Special Forces medic who served in Afghanistan. The company's flagship product, the SOF® Tourniquet, was invented on the battlefield after Johnson recognized that the tourniquet then issued to U.S. forces was a World War II–era design incapable of meeting the demands of modern combat casualty care. From that single invention, TacMed Solutions has grown into a global leader in tactical medical gear, with products trusted by elite military units, law enforcement agencies, and emergency responders across more than 70 countries.

The Origin Story: From a Green Beret's Aid Bag to a Global Standard

The year was 2003. Ross Johnson, a Green Beret deployed to Afghanistan, reached into his aid bag during a field operation and found the same tourniquet that American soldiers had been issued since the Second World War — a narrow, single-strap design with no windlass, no locking mechanism, and no reliable ability to achieve arterial occlusion under field conditions. In the years of combat ahead, this inadequacy would cost lives.

Johnson didn't file a report. He built a solution. Working with basic materials and a sewing machine, he designed what would become the SOF® Tourniquet — a wide-band, windlass-equipped device with a patented Tri-Ring locking system and aircraft-grade aluminum hardware, engineered for one-handed application under stress by a soldier with degraded fine motor function. He sewed the first several thousand himself and gave them to friends deploying to theater. The mission, in his own words, wasn't to build a business — it was to help his buddies come home.

That mission scaled. The SOF® Tourniquet earned battlefield validation through the most demanding possible testing: actual combat casualty care in Iraq and Afghanistan during some of the most intense close-quarters fighting of the post-9/11 era. End-user feedback from combat medics, Special Forces operators, and unit surgeons drove iterative improvements through multiple generations — each version more reliable, lighter, and faster to apply than the last.

Today, the SOF® Tourniquet is one of only a small number of tourniquets recommended by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC), used by seven of the ten largest police departments in the United States, endorsed as the exclusive tourniquet of the American Red Cross, and deployed by elite military forces worldwide. It remains 100% manufactured in the United States, directly employing more than 70 people in its production.

From Tourniquets to a Full Prehospital Ecosystem

As the SOF® Tourniquet's reputation expanded beyond the military into law enforcement, fire/EMS, and civilian preparedness, TacMed Solutions recognized an opportunity — and a responsibility — to develop products that addressed the full spectrum of prehospital trauma. The company's R&D team, drawing on direct feedback from field medics and trauma clinicians, began developing solutions for the hemorrhage control challenges that a tourniquet alone could not address: junctional wounds, penetrating torso trauma, and complex multi-system injuries.

The OLAES® Modular Bandage emerged from this phase as one of the most innovative wound dressings in the history of tactical medicine. Named to honor SSG Tony Olaes, KIA in the Mangretay Valley on September 20, 2004, the OLAES® is the first truly "packable" trauma bandage — incorporating 3 meters of gauze, a removable occlusive plastic sheet, and a pressure cup capable of acting as a wound packing tool, all within a single integrated dressing. It solved the problem of carrying multiple separate wound care items by combining pressure dressing, occlusive dressing, and wound packing capability into a single lightweight package usable by any provider at any level of training.

The OLAES® Hemostatic Bandage built on this foundation by integrating HemCon® ChitoGauze® PRO into the OLAES® platform — combining proven chitosan-based hemostatic chemistry with the multi-function pressure and occlusion capabilities of the original bandage to create what many trauma professionals consider the most comprehensive single trauma bandage available for complex wound profiles.

TacMed Solutions subsequently expanded into trauma kits and system solutions, simulation and training products, and broader medical equipment categories — growing from a single tourniquet manufacturer into a provider of complete medical response capabilities for military units, law enforcement agencies, fire/EMS departments, and civilian responders. With more than 2,000 products available and operations in more than 70 countries, TacMed Solutions now occupies a position at the top tier of the global tactical medical supply market.

Why MED-TAC International Carries TacMed Solutions

MED-TAC International selects its brand partners by applying the same evidence-based framework used to evaluate clinical interventions: Who created this product? What is the validation data? Who trusts it in the field? TacMed Solutions passes every element of that evaluation with distinction.

The SOF® Tourniquet's development history — direct input from Special Forces medical personnel, iterative improvement based on real combat casualty data, independent laboratory validation against ANSI standards, and CoTCCC recommendation status — represents exactly the kind of evidence-backed product development that MED-TAC's clinician-founded team demands before placing a product in front of customers whose lives depend on reliable equipment. We carry TacMed Solutions because our customers — combat medics, law enforcement officers, paramedics, and trained civilians — deserve nothing less than products that have been proven in the environments where failure is not survivable.

MED-TAC is an authorized distributor of genuine TacMed Solutions products. Every item in this collection is sourced directly from the manufacturer and is the latest current-generation version — not surplus, not a counterfeit, and not a previous-generation clearance item represented as current. The SOF® Tourniquet and OLAES® Bandage are among the most counterfeited tactical medical products in the world; purchasing from an authorized distributor like MED-TAC is the only way to guarantee authenticity and current-generation manufacturing quality.

Flagship TacMed Solutions Products and What Makes Them Best-in-Class

SOF® Tourniquet (SOF-T / SOFTT-W)

The benchmark prehospital tourniquet. Features a true 1.5-inch reinforced low-stretch polyester compression band, aircraft-grade aluminum windlass machined from a single bar stock, and a patented Tri-Ring Lock™ and Tourniquet Retention Assistance Clip™ (TRAC) system for secure windlass retention under sustained load. The Slack Indicator Wedge provides visual confirmation of slack removal — the critical step that most tourniquet failures involve omitting under stress. Available in standard and wide (SOFTT-W) configurations.

OLAES® Modular Bandage

A multi-purpose trauma dressing integrating pressure bandage, occlusive dressing capability (via removable plastic sheet), and wound packing gauze (3 meters) in a single compact package. The pressure cup enables direct wound packing without the gauze having to be removed separately. CoTCCC-recommended for use as a trauma dressing in the management of compressible hemorrhage when tourniquet application is not possible.

OLAES® Hemostatic Bandage

The OLAES® platform integrated with HemCon® ChitoGauze® PRO — a chitosan-based hemostatic agent with a proven track record in both combat and civilian trauma care. Combines all the multi-function capabilities of the OLAES® with hemostatic chemistry for junctional and non-compressible wound management. One of the most versatile single-package trauma bandages available for complex wound profiles.

Trauma Kits and System Solutions

TacMed Solutions offers pre-configured hemorrhage control kits and IFAK-style trauma kits that combine the SOF® Tourniquet, OLAES® Bandage, and complementary supplies — including chest seals, wound packing gauze, and gloves — into ready-to-deploy kit configurations used by law enforcement agencies, military units, and EMS departments building out or refreshing their medical supply programs.

Airway and Extended Care Products

TacMed's expanded product catalog includes airway management adjuncts, hypothermia prevention equipment, and IV/IO access supplies that align with the full MARCH assessment protocol for tactical field care. These products are designed to be used as part of an integrated system — not as standalone items — supporting the entire lifecycle of prehospital trauma care from hemorrhage control through definitive care handoff.

TacMed Solutions Products in Real-World Application

Combat Medic and Special Operations Aid Bag

The SOF® Tourniquet originated in this context and remains the most validated tourniquet for combat casualty care. Special Forces medical sergeants, 18D-qualified medics, and combat medics across all service branches have used TacMed Solutions products as their primary hemorrhage control platform for over two decades. The OLAES® Bandage's multi-function capability reduces kit weight compared to carrying separate pressure dressings, packing gauze, and occlusive sheets — a meaningful advantage when every ounce counts over extended missions. TacMed's full IFAK solutions are available in our IFAK kits collection.

Law Enforcement Patrol and SWAT Operations

Seven of the ten largest police departments in the United States — including agencies with some of the highest-risk operational profiles in the world — have selected the SOF® Tourniquet as their standard. For patrol officers, this typically means a SOF-T staged in a dedicated chest or belt pouch for immediate self-aid or buddy care. For tactical units, TacMed products populate both officer IFAKs and team-level trauma kits staged at the unit or vehicle level. Our police medical kits include configurations that integrate TacMed Solutions products into complete law enforcement medical programs.

Rescue Task Force and Active Shooter Response

Rescue Task Force (RTF) programs deploy law enforcement–escorted medical personnel into warm zones during active threat events. RTF medics and officers require compact, standardized hemorrhage control kits that every team member can operate — not just trained medics. The SOF® Tourniquet's engineered design for gross-motor-skill application under extreme stress makes it the preferred choice for RTF standardization. OLAES® Bandages address junctional and torso wounds in the same kit. See our rescue task force equipment and active shooter response kits for complete RTF solutions.

Civilian Preparedness and Stop the Bleed®

The American Red Cross selected the SOF® Tourniquet as its exclusive tourniquet — a decision that brought TacMed Solutions products into the nation's most widely deployed civilian hemorrhage control training program. Stop the Bleed® instructors, trained first responders, and civilians building home or vehicle bleed control kits benefit from using the same product that military and professional users trust, rather than a consumer-grade approximation. Our public access bleeding control kits offer accessible entry points into TacMed's product ecosystem.

TCCC and TECC Training Programs

TacMed Solutions' RISE™ training system provides high-fidelity simulation tools that replicate the mechanical feedback of the SOF® Tourniquet and OLAES® Bandage — enabling realistic hemorrhage control training without consuming expensive clinical-grade supplies. Training coordinators building TCCC or TECC curricula gain a direct line from the training environment to the operational kit: students train on a functionally identical product to what they will carry in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions About TacMed Solutions

Is the SOF® Tourniquet the same as the CAT tourniquet?

No. The SOF® Tourniquet (by TacMed Solutions) and the Combat Application Tourniquet® (C-A-T®, by North American Rescue) are two distinct products from two different manufacturers. Both are CoTCCC-recommended limb tourniquets and have strong evidence bases from combat use, but they differ significantly in mechanical design: the SOF-T uses a wider 1.5-inch band with a windlass that locks into a Tri-Ring system, while the C-A-T uses a narrower 1.5-inch band with a different windlass and clip mechanism. Many agencies carry both. Selection is often driven by individual training familiarity, agency protocol, and use-case requirements. MED-TAC carries both products — see our full tourniquets collection for comparison.

How do I know if I'm getting a genuine TacMed Solutions SOF® Tourniquet?

Counterfeit SOF® Tourniquets are a well-documented problem in the tactical medical supply market. Genuine products are distinguishable by the "TacMed Solutions" branding on the windlass and packaging, precise manufacturing tolerances (the aluminum windlass should have a machined, not cast, feel), and current-generation packaging. MED-TAC sources all TacMed Solutions products directly from the manufacturer as an authorized distributor, and every product ships in original manufacturer packaging. If you have questions about product authenticity, contact us directly.

What generation is the current SOF® Tourniquet?

TacMed Solutions is currently shipping the Gen 5 SOF® Tourniquet. Each generation has incorporated end-user feedback and laboratory testing to improve application speed, mechanical reliability, and ease of use under stress. Gen 5 improvements include a redesigned buckle geometry for faster slack removal, updated windlass geometry for more consistent torque, and ANSI standard compliance certification. MED-TAC always stocks the current generation.

Is the OLAES® Bandage CoTCCC-recommended?

The OLAES® Modular Bandage is a CoTCCC-recommended trauma dressing. It is used in TCCC curricula and included in military and law enforcement IFAK configurations worldwide. The OLAES® Hemostatic Bandage additionally incorporates HemCon® ChitoGauze® PRO, a CoTCCC-recommended hemostatic agent. All CoTCCC recommendation status is verified at the time of stocking by MED-TAC's clinical team.

Does TacMed Solutions make products for non-military use?

Yes. TacMed Solutions has actively expanded beyond its original military customer base to serve law enforcement, fire/EMS, the American Red Cross, and the civilian preparedness community. The same SOF® Tourniquet used by Special Operations Forces is appropriate — and increasingly common — in public access bleeding control kits, school medical cabinets, vehicle kits, and individual EDC setups. The company's training products also support civilian Stop the Bleed® and community hemorrhage control programs.

What is TacMed Solutions' RISE™ system?

RISE™ is TacMed Solutions' simulation and training product line, designed to provide realistic mechanical feedback in hemorrhage control training without consuming clinical-grade consumable supplies. RISE™ training tourniquets replicate the weight, feel, and application mechanics of the SOF® Tourniquet, enabling repetition-based training to build motor memory for proper tourniquet application. It was selected as a JEMS Hot Product at EMS Today 2021 alongside the SOF® Tourniquet and OLAES® Hemostatic Bandage.

What complementary products should I consider alongside TacMed Solutions items?

A complete hemorrhage control capability requires more than a tourniquet and a pressure bandage. To build out a comprehensive kit, consider pairing TacMed Solutions products with hemostatic agents for wound packing, chest seals and thoracic supplies for penetrating torso trauma, and an IFAK pouch or complete IFAK kit to carry it all. MED-TAC's complete massive hemorrhage control collection provides the full ecosystem of supplies that TacMed products work within.

All products sourced from the actual brand manufacturer or authorized master distributors. CoTCCC recommendation status verified where applicable. Ships from MED-TAC International, Pembroke Pines, FL — clinician-founded, veteran-led, SDVOSB-certified.
